MISSING VOICES

Romita Sur

A poem about how the media misrepresents and underrepresents the stories of minorities, of people of colour, of life outside the West.

43 students missing and murdered on Mexican land
Countless black men, women, and children being shot
Bombings by the West in the Middle East
Muslim women being violated
Yet no big headlines, little news coverage
Where is the media?
Where are the NGOs?
Where is International law?
Yet I also see
Someone flailing her arms about while shouting in a heavy accent
Nothing but a mockery
Our lives are not your soap opera
Our lives are ours
So we demand
Where is our justice?
Who will recognize our loss?
We will show you
We will make you see us
We will make our voices heard
